42 mins: Ito takes on Barisic over on the right wing before giving to the ball to Doan who fizzes a cross into the box. Juranovic is wary of the danger and leaps at the ball nodding it out for a corner when his goalkeeper came out to claim it.

39 mins: Luka Modric delivers another free kick into the penalty area but Doan deals with the ball and Japan kick off a counter-attack. Junya Ito flies up the pitch before sending it into the feet of Daizen Maeda.

The forward holds it up deep in Croatia’s half allowing his teammates to join him around the penalty area. He sends the ball into the middle where it gets slipped through to Daichi Kamada inside the box.

He cuts onto his left foot and scoops a shot over the crossbar!

36 mins: Japan are at their best when they pass the ball quickly and run at defences. With Croatia sitting deep and getting men behind the ball they’re making it tough for the Japanese to break them down.

Yuto Nagatomo receives the ball out wide but his cross into the box is whipped straight out of play.

33 mins: Croatia seem a lot tighter defensively than they were in the opening 20 minutes or so. Japan are finding it tricky to break them down and attempt a couple of attacks through the middle.

Roan and Maeda link-up well but the final pass into the area it off target and Croatia clear the danger.

30 mins: After a bright start from Japan, Croatia are fighting back nicely. They keep the pressure on the Japanese by sending in cross after cross from both sides of the pitch.

The best chance almost drops to Kramaric inside the six-yard area but he can’t get a toe to the ball in order to tap it past Gonda.

27 mins: Close! A chipped pass up the pitch sees Bruno Petkovic played in behind after the forward makes a darting run through the lines. He collects the ball and brings it into the penalty area.

Andrej Kramaric is waving his arms for the ball at the far side of the penalty area but Petkovic doesn’t see him. Instead he halts his run before a poor touch sends the ball rolling into the arms of goalkeeper Shuichi Gonda.

24 mins: Chance! Croatia win a free kick just inside the Japanese half and Luka Modric lifts it into the penalty area. Mateo Kovacic gets to the ball under pressure and nods it over to Josko Gvardiol who laces a first time effort high and wide!

21 mins: There’s an unyielding energy to Japan which means that Croatia haven’t been able to spend any prolonged time in possession before they’re forced to defend again.

This has been a good 20 minutes for the Asian side who seem to be growing in confidence.

18 mins: Close! Yuto Nagatomo gets forward on the left wing and brings down a diagonal ball when it comes over the top. The left-back then whips a cross into the box and fins Daizen Maeda who should do better.

The Japanese forward misses his header and Josko Gvardioal turns the ball out of play.

15 mins: This has been a lively start from both teams with action at either end of the pitch. If things continue this way then it won’t remain goalless for long.

The winner of this encounter will go on to play either Brazil or South Korea in the quarter-finals.
